REVIEW- Fourways Farmer's Market

Updated: Feb 22, 2018

Fun with friends and family at this favoured farmer's market

Sunday Blues are now a thing of the past. Pile the prams, picnic blankets and camping chairs into your hatchback and head over to the Fourways Farmer's Market for a day out with your loved ones. Although open everyday except Saturday, Joburgers prefer popping in on the proverbial day of rest to enjoy the tasty treats and take-home trinkets the market has to offer.

R10 gets you inside, and after a quick bag search (to make sure you haven't brought your own nibbles to the food fair), you're in. An array of aromatic African food is on offer. On one side, traditional jerk chicken sizzles on the grill; turn your head and biltong - a South African favourite - is being sliced, diced and spiced to the customers taste.

We are truly spoilt for choice. I am hankering for some braai'd meat from the shisa nyama vendors but the bayenetu served on injera at the Ethiopian food stall instantly whets my eager appetite. Reluctantly, my companion and I settle on our choice of refreshments - we would've been happy to try it all - and navigate through the throngs of families and groups of friends soaking up the summer sun.

A partly shaded hay bale catches our eye and we make a bee-line for it before it's taken by one of the countless locals.

,All around us, we hear the unbridled laughter of children running through the market space, making it their playground. Young professionals are engaged in light-hearted conversation; covering any and all subjects except for the obvious lamentation of heading back to work the following morning. Millenials are dressed impeccably, snapchatting, instagramming and live tweeting everything for their followers and fans.

A Sunday well spent brings a week of content and it is clear that everyone is in high spirits. The market is drawing to a close, and we are being ushered out. With a heavy heart, my companion and I walk through the market one last time. We grab our final cocktail and call it a day.
